For this brand focus we delve into the world of Chenille. Taking it’s name from the French word for “caterpillar,” Chenille is a velvety yarn created in 18th century France. The yarn is used for the making distinct upholstery fabric which is soft with a tufted piles also referred to by the same name.
This fabric is highly desirable for sofas, chairs, ottomans, benches, headboards and pillows. Chenille yarn can be made from a multitude of fibres such as cotton, linen, silk, viscose, rayon, wool, acrylic, polyester, or a combination. The raised tufted pile fabric created by using chenille yarns is durable, yet can often times feel silky and appear more dimensional when compared to velvet.
The yarn is made by placing short lengths of yarn called the “pile” between two “core yarns” and twisting them together. The edges of these piles then stand at right angles to the yarn’s core, giving chenille both its softness and its characteristic look. The cut yarn catches light differently on its various angles creating a somewhat iridescent effect.
GLANT recognized the beauty and applicability of chenille more than forty years ago in the mid Seventies and began producing this quality in its Northern Italian mill. Long recognized as the industry’s gold standard and leader in the chenille upholstery category, GLANT continues to create innovative, timeless, and highly sought-after constructions created from cotton, silk, linen, rayon, and acrylic custom-spun chenille yarns and offered in stunning colourations, with vast ranges of neutrals and colours.
